Dear Colleagues,
I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for all your efforts in keeping our great University system up and running. Our faculty and professional staff have gone above and beyond the call of duty during this unprecedented time to make sure that we can supply the vital services it takes to continue educating our students and caring for our patients. Once again, labor has proven how vitally important it is to the health and well-being of our society.
UUP is not the only labor organization that has been effected by this pandemic. Farm workers at Primex Farms, a major nut company in Wasco, Calif., have been severely impacted by the coronavirus. Workers who spoke out against the company for failing to protect employees on the job from contracting the coronavirus have been fired. More than 100 Primex workers have gotten COVID-19.
The United Farm Workers (UFW), which filed charges against Primex with the National Labor Relations Board in late July, are reaching out, asking for support to help their members.
I have attached their letter and request to sign their petition, which demands that Primex rehire those employees who were fired and ensure that proper protections for workers’ safety are set into place.
Thank you in advance for helping the United Farm Workers fight back against these unfortunate-and deadly-decisions made by Primex.
Please spread this information as widely as possible.
In Solidarity,
Tom Tucker
