HVALF presents Summer School for Troublemakers

The Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation is offering its “Summer School for Troublemakers” workshops to help labor activists build relationships with community groups and use basic organizing tools to build union membership.

The series of virtual workshops starts Thursday, July 8, and runs on Thursdays through July 22. The two-hour seminars start at 7 p.m. Registration is limited to union and community members from the Hudson Valley; there is a $10 registration fee.

Labor Notes will co-host the series, which is based on Labor Notes’ book, “Secrets of a Successful Organizer.”

The workshops are:

  • Beating Apathy, July 8. Participants will learn about practical organizing tools for engaging co-workers, taking action and getting results.
  • Assembling Your Dream Team, July 15. Learn how to map out the existing networks in your workplace, identify the leaders in those networks, and then knit them together into an organizing committee.
  • Turning an Issue into a Campaign, July 22: Learn how to sort through the issues you hear from co-workers, bring people together and make a plan to solve them.
