“Greenhouse: An Astronomer Looks at Global Warming”
Friday, September 20th @ 12 noon in Humanities 2001
Headlines blare that the Earth is warming, the arctic is melting, and the climate is changing. Meanwhile a vocal minority says it isn’t, and even if it were it is either normal, or good for you. Which is it? This is an area where opinion must take a back seat to science, because the science is unequivocal: the Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate, and we are the cause. In this presentation I will lay out the physics of the Greenhouse Effect, and why this makes life on Earth possible. We will look at how the Greenhouse Effect has made the planet Venus so different from Earth. I will lay out the evidence that global warming is anthropogenic in origin, and that we only have ourselves to blame.
